The Procedure of Dental Implants
The dentist first performs a complete dental checkup on the patient with the help of digital imaging systems. The treatment area is analyzed to determine if a bone graft would be required. If the patient has experienced bone loss, a bone graft must be placed in the extraction site first and allowed to heal properly before the implant procedure.
After all these are done, the dentist evaluates the extraction site during the second dental appointment and places the implant into the jawbone. The gums over the site are stitched and left to heal for a period of four to six months.
During the third appointment, the dentist takes X-rays of the mouth to ensure the integration of the implant to the bone structure in the mouth. When the dentist sees that the implant has fused, they set an abutment over the implant. An artificial tooth or a dental crown is then placed to provide a complete restoration for the patient.Â
Aftercare for Dental Implants
The dentist would instruct the patient to follow proper oral hygiene. They would be advised to consume specific food for three to four days after the procedure to heal the area properly. The patient would also be advised to rinse their mouth using a saltwater solution to clean their mouth. They should not brush the implant site for a few days as per the instructions of the dentist. Regular dental checkups also help to provide proper care to the teeth.
